Adapted from an original story by Masamune Shirou, who took the anime world by storm with his seminal 1995 work, Ghost in the Shell, the feature length version of Appleseed is set in the year 2131 following a global war that has laid waste to most of the Earth. From the ashes, however, one ideal city has been built that represents mankind's last effort at redemption. It is called Olympus, yet 50% of its population consists of half-human, half-artificial clones called "Bioroids" who have been built with the sole purpose of stabilizing human being's aggressive nature and preserving societal stability. A young female soldier named Dunan Knute, having barely survived the great war, is suddenly plucked out of the battlefield and brought to Olympus. She awakens there to be met by an old boyfriend, Briareos, but finds herself at a loss for words upon seeing that he has become half machine after sustaining near fatal wounds on the front lines of North Africa. The fate of these two former lovers soon becomes entangled in discovery of the inconceivable truth about Olympus. |
