A brain surgeon, Jin Minakata, is hurtled back in time to the Edo period at the time of the fall of the Tokugawa government. He finds himself having to save lives without the luxury of modern medical equipment or medicine, and unwittingly thrown into the middle of the tumultuous political times. Taking to heart the words, “God only presents you with challenges that you can overcome,” Jin endeavors to make the most of his new lot in life, as if convinced that he will rediscover something in the past which he has lost in the present. Awash in a different time and a different world of epic scale and grandeur, Jin finds that history now turns on him.

Haruki Mizunuma is a workaholic who runs a design office in Tokyo and has left the rearing of his grade school son, Ren, completely to his wife, Kyoko. Just where is Level 7 and what is it? Two completely distinct plot lines ultimately cross paths and converge on a heinous murder. A man and woman wake up in a condominium room but have no memory of anything. The only clue they have to their identity is a tattoo on their arms that reads, "Level 7." Meanwhile, in a separate location, a solitary elderly lady goes missing having left the message, "Once you arrive at Level 7, there is no return," prompting her granddaughter to begin a search for her whereabouts.

A cruiser yacht, with all aboard mummified, is discovered drifting out at sea. May, 2007.
